• Deer bellow to intimidate rivals and announce their presence. The call is deep, strained, and drawn out.
• To avoid fighting, the deer stand side by side to demonstrate their strength.
• If rivals are not intimidated by the display, fights ensue in which the antlers clash head-on.
• The rut is very strenuous for deer; they can lose up to 20% of their body weight during this period.
